Writing Copy for the Web

Writing the copy or text for your website is just as important as the actual design and layout. Web users will usually look at a website for a very short time before deciding whether it is going to be any use to them. You have a limited amount of time to grab their attention!

When writing copy, keep these points in mind:

  • Always have a clear objective
  • Use simple and positive language
  • Focus on the benefits to the reader / customer
  • Don't oversell your product (you will scare off potential customers if something sounds too good to be true)

It is very important to get your point across in a simple way using ‘natural' language. Don't be tempted to use long words to impress. Avoid negative words like ‘perhaps' or ‘maybe'.

Remember, potential customers want to do business with successful people. Obviously, bad spelling and grammar will not present the right image for your company; get a colleague to proofread your copy.

Keep sentences short, to the point and focused on your objective. If you are unclear of what that objective is, your copy will be muddled. Think about what you want to achieve. An enquiry? An order?

Remember to focus on what the benefits are for your customers and tailor the copy to address their personal interests or the interests of their business.

Writing copy with SEO in mind

One of the key factors to optimizing your website is to have relevant text or copy that matches your title tags. You need to choose your key phrases first before you start to write your copy. Choose carefully by researching what your target audience might search for on the web. It is very important that this research is done properly as you may think you know what terms are being used, but in most instances this is not the case. When you have your key phrases you can start to write your copy.

Remember that you need to write your copy ensuring that all possible keyword opportunities have been used. But at the same time keep the natural flow of the writing; you don’t want to over do the keyword density and compromise readability. After all, it needs to appeal to your reader to hold their attention to result in a sale.
